IRS representation from a CPA
CPAs can represent you before the IRS on any tax matter. Once you sign a power of attorney (IRS Form 2848), we talk to the IRS for you, pull your IRS account records and answer letters on your behalf.
You work directly with a CPA from the first letter to the last.
IRS notices and letters
Most IRS problems start with a letter. The common ones:
- CP2000: the IRS thinks the income on your return doesn't match what employers, banks or brokers reported. You usually have 30 days to respond.
- CP14: a bill for a balance due. Interest keeps adding up until it's paid.
- CP504: a notice of intent to levy. The IRS can start by taking your state tax refund.
- LT11 or Letter 1058: the final notice before the IRS levies wages or bank accounts. You have 30 days to request a hearing.
- Audit letters, which ask for records to support part of your return.
Send us the letter as soon as it arrives. Answering before the deadline keeps your options open.
IRS audit representation
Most audits are done by mail and cover one or two items on your return. We gather the records, prepare the response and deal with the examiner for you.
We also represent clients in New Jersey Division of Taxation and Pennsylvania Department of Revenue audits. If you disagree with an audit result, we can take your case to the IRS Independent Office of Appeals.
Payment plans, penalty relief and back taxes
If you owe more than you can pay, there's usually a way to resolve it:
- Payment plans. Individuals who owe less than $50,000 can usually pay over up to 72 months, and a short-term plan gives you up to 180 days.
- Penalty relief. If you've had no penalties in the past three years, you may qualify to have a failure-to-file or failure-to-pay penalty removed under the IRS first-time abatement policy.
- Unfiled returns. We prepare the missing years. If the IRS already filed a return for you, it usually overstates what you owe.
- Offers in compromise. The IRS usually settles for less than the full balance only when you can't pay it in full, so we check whether you qualify before you pay the application fee.
Be careful with companies that promise to settle your tax debt for pennies on the dollar. The IRS warns about offer in compromise mills that charge large fees for offers that won't be accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Don't ignore it. Check the response date, then send it to us. We'll tell you what the IRS wants and answer it on time.
Usually three years from when you filed. It's six years if more than 25% of your income was left off the return, and there's no limit if a return was never filed or was fraudulent.
For notices, audits, payment plans and penalties, a CPA can represent you. If the IRS is investigating possible tax fraud, speak with a tax attorney first.
